Difference between scope view settings : Store View, Global and Website view

There are quite a few fields in the attribute properties which make no obvious sense to me - I have used Vignette, Interwoven and a bit of AEM so some of this is completely new terminology to me. Can anyone advise and if there is some good basic trainign on the differences?
