This is my first magento site, and I noticed when my product is out of stock, the photo does not display any longer. I would like for my customers to still see the image so they know I offer the product, but have some message associated with it that lets them know it is currently out of stock . Can any seasoned magento users tell me how I might accomplish this?
I found the answer to my question.

Hi,
Normal Magento stock settings is, if a product is no longer in stock (and saleable).. Then magento removes it from the catalog, and this gives your client a error 404 - page not found.
Solution this is to make an adjustment to your setting.
Go to System > Configuration > Catalog > Inventory > Display Out of Stock Products > Set this to YES.
This way, the product is shown, but not saleable.
This also gives you the advantage of not losing rankings in the SERP as well, because you will not be removing the product-link, and preventing the "error 404 - page not found".
Let me know, if this makes sense or you have additional questions :0)

Hi @Matelen,
Please make sure that all radio buttons have been move "in line" on the 3 areas on the right side of the image.
Like this:
This setting will make the "white agile harness" show on both main / Thumb and small image.
Let me know if this helps
