Paid extension or free integration?

Hi,

I work for a technology provider that specialises in digital coupons, voucher codes, etc. I would love to know whether you think Magento users would prefer to use a PAID extension that sits within Magento, or a FREE integration that requires a user to register an account with a different company and become familiar with a new piece of software.

Have you ever had to make a choice between the two? Which did you opt for?
