Buy One Get One 50% Off

Hi! My name is Heather and I work for a online merchant. We are using Magento ver. 1.9.2.2 and we want to do a promotion:

Buy two of the exact same items (from a specific category) and get one of those items for 50% off. It seems like a simple deal but there doesn't appear to be any simple way to do in the "Shopping Cart Rules" under the promotions tab. 

Can someone please walk me through this?

Hi Heather,

It's not you. I've run into the same challenge before. That type of promotion is not something that Magento handles natively. For that, I'd recommend an extension, like: https://marketplace.magento.com/amasty-extension-special-promotions-pro.html . I've had a lot of success with that extension.
