Ability for customer to purchase downloadable on behalf of another customer

Is there an extension which provides the ability for a customer to purchase a download on behalf of another customer?

Here is the scenario:

John Smith logs into the store and purchases a downloadable product on behalf of Mary Jones. John Smith provides Mary Jones' first name, last name and email address at some point during the checkout process. System sends Mary Jones an email letting her know a downloadable product has been purchased on her behalf. Mary Jones logs into the store and downloads the file via her account.

I'm not familiar with an extension that's an exact match for what you're looking for. The conundrum is that if a user needs to be able to login securely to an account, then they need to have an account with the associated purchase. This requires the setup of a password, etc. Furthermore, they won't have paid for the item. Someone else will, from a different account. While it may be possible, here are some other potential scenarios:

I'm assuming that you don't want shoppers to be able to use the download link without being logged in, making it more difficult than letting the shoppers simply forward an e-mail with a publicly accessible download link. (If that assumption is wrong, then you should consider adjusting the "Sharable" setting within the Downloadable Product Options settings)

There are gift card extensions that will allow shopper 1 to purchase a digital gift card which can then be redeemed by another person (shopper 2). This would simplify things, as user #2 would be able to set their own password themselves, etc.

(Note: My only words or wisdom when it comes to gift card extensions is to make sure that sales taxes properly compute. In some cases, I've seen extensions that redeem these digital gift cards like coupons/promotions, instead of like a payment method, which can cause issues for tax collection. I'm not sure if your products are taxable in the first place, so it may be moot)

Alternatively, there are some extensions for sharing User Account access. These are more often used for B2B stores where there are multiple employees of an organization that require access.
