Magento installation - timezone select field has no values

I have uploaded all the files to the web server successfully however in the localization stage there are no select options in the Timezone* drop down menu , seen as though it is a compulsory field  I can not continue the installation... how do I fix this?.

Please, any help would be very helpful.
