Magento 2 front & backend returning 404 error after installation - xampp

after successful installation magento is throwing 404 error on frontend as well as backend .htaccess file is in /root directory I also moved pub/.htaccess to see whether it works as mentioned on stackenghange.

I'm having exactly the same issue

• Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
• Apache/2.4.18 (Ubuntu)
• PHP 5.6.21-1+donate.sury.org~wily+1
• Zend Engine v2.6.0
• Zend OPcache v7.0.6-dev

I[m getting the same. I was with Magento 2.0 so was pleased to see Magento 2.1 because its shuch an obvious fail i was sure others would get it too and it would be fixed, but it wasn't. All you do is a standard install, nothing fancy.

I got it fixed the same day, the problem was with server configurations. you should try it in wamp instead of xampp
