Thanks but after checking directories & files they are all the same as they should be from the info here http://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v2.0/install-gde/install/file-system-perms.html

Directories are 770 files are 660 if I change them to 755 & 644 I lose the site altogether.

The problem seems to be with the pub/static folders whereby the file permissions are 770 for directories and 660 for files, I followed mubdea idea of manually changing but seems to be temporary until you clean the cache.

if I change the file permissions to 755 & 644 all works fine until you clean the cache then the folders come back at the original permissions of 770 & 660.

Strange must be a way to permanently change the permissions.
