I am setting up a localhost test server for Magento 2.4.2 under Ubunto 20.04LTS and have installed all the programs required; and I tested they are active with the recommended INI file changes for Apache2, MySql, PHP and ElasticSearch and Composer.
When I run composer it asks for a User ID and Password and every one I try fails;
1. My Magento.com ID and Password
2. My root ID and Password
3. My other Admin User ID and Password
4. The other services IDs and Passwords
Which is the right one to use?
Plus Composer is trying to install Magento 2.3
To add to the problem I only received on key from Magento and cannot find it again.
Plus the version of Magento seems to be 2.3 not 2.4.2
I know I am close but no joy
Please help
Thank you
Hello @mainetopmi65d1
You need to create an account in the Magento marketplace. Use the username as a public key and password as the private key.
Refer to these URLs:
https://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v2.4/install-gde/prereq/connect-auth.html
https://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v2.4/install-gde/install/sample-data-after-composer.html
Run the below command:
composer create-project --repository-url=https://repo.magento.com/ magento/project-community-edition=2.4.2
I hope it helps.
Thank you Sanjay.
I had seen and copied the extremely long key when I opened my account but can no longer see it. I have it saved in a text file. Do I just copy and pastes this extremely long key in the Password field?
I see that I can generate my own key. Is this to generate a replacement for the extremely long key I briefly saw and copied?
Once I copy a key can I paste that into the prompt that Composer shows using right click on my mouse?
Thank you for the link to the proper repo install file for magento 2.4.2.
I am going to try using my Magento ID and the Key I copied to see if Composer will allow me to install Magento 2.4.2.
Fingers crossed.
Total complete FAIL
I put my Magento ID in User ID and the Access Key I pasted into Password and it did not work.
Should I delete my Magento Account and make a new one?
First I am going to make my own key and see if that works with my Magento ID
Thank you
Nothing works.
Use the Public key as your username and the Private key as your password.

Did you find the solution? I am stuck in the same step.
Solved!
I am surprised no one pointed this out.
There are two portals of Magento and the one with which you are trying to generate the keys is https://account.magento.com/
There is another one, which is the right one, that is
https://marketplace.magento.com/
Use this to login and under your profile you will have the right options
