Creating multiple stores

I have created 5 Root Categories and then 5 store names (English, French etc.) under my main website and then created a Store View Name for each of those.

However, when I go to the frontend of my site, there is no drop down menu to switch between the stores. I also have a theme on my site different to the default Magento one.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to create a new website for each of the stores before a drop down will be visible?
