Remove Shop By etc

I have tried this recommendation http://www.hostknox.com/tutorials/magento/remove-default-blocks  

but I can't get rid of these items and the suggestions mentioned are not available in my setup.

Did you empty cache completely?

Yes, I Flushed both Magento Cache and Cache Storage
After that I reloaded Config, Layouts, Blocks HTML output
