Where to add meta title and description for home page on Magento 1?

As I understand it should be done here System -> Configuration -> Design -> HTML Head, however, although I have added the information there, it doesn't show up. Is there another way how to do it?

You can add meta information from the CMS page configuration.

go to CMS pages of the home page and add meta information on meta-information tab
