How To Remove List Pages?

I just changed the List mode from Grid (default) / List to Grid Only and it removed the List option in the frontend but unfortunately all the list pages are still physically present in the background.

 

I want all the List pages to be removed (404) as I don't want them indexed by the search engines.

 

Is it possible to stop Magento building these pages or remove them?

There is an easier solution - just use the canonical link. Regardless of the chosen mode, the canonical link will always point to the page without it.

Please have a look (with the View mode chosen by default):
