Image or color in attribute

I'm developing a magento store for a client who wants to sells clothes online but I've the requirement of display the attribute "Color" in configurable products as an image or an hexadecimal color in the client front end instead the dropdown list.

Does anybody know how can I do this?

Magento introduced its own configurable swatch system in the most recent version of Magento CE (1.9.1.0). It should work ok'ish for your usecase i think, I have added a link to the userguide below
