Need help with: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 1030 Got error -1 from storage engine

Greetings,

Our Magento 1.8.1 store, without any recent updates or changes to file structure or dbase, suddenly started generating the following error:

There has been an error processing your request
SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 1030 Got error -1 from storage engine

There is access to the back end, but the front end is gone. Any ideas how to resove this particular issue?
