I want to know how to use customer email addresses from Magento 1 for email lists.  Do I need some other program to link or just export someway to email provider?

Hi Pam how are you?,

You can use Export Customer functionality from admin section going to System > Import/Export > Export then select customer to export type, then you can skip data from the csv file or very easy map to other filed.
