Google doesn't focus on content unique to each page

I am not sure how to best title this post. I am sorry for any confusion.

So today I noticed when sharing links across social media sourceslike Google Plus, it doens't focus on content that is unique to a specific url. In other words, every page including CMS pages, product pages, category pages, etc has the same header and footer and in most cases, the same sidebars. So all of that is the same across the site. If I tell Google to crawl a product url, it spits back the title, the description, even suggested images but the images it pulls are images in the sidebar, the header, the footer, etc. Why is this?

if I go to other sites and submit product urls, it immediately sticks to content associated to that page. Is this a theme problem or something else?
