Images not editable

Hello all, 

We created a magento webshow for the basic install with the Madison Demo data.

We started adding our own attributes and stuff and somehow our site crashed (server error/data failure).

All was restored, but after that we do not see the interface in the backend for adding image to a product, not the option to select anything. It just displays a blank page.

Installed a second (new) webshop install on the same server and that one worked fine.

Does anybody know how this could happen and more important, how to fix this?

Images not editable, cannot upload new images, cannot do actions on images from admin are caused due to lack of permissions on media folder. Also php gd2 needs to be available on server for image processing.

If the page is entirely blank then you will see the errors in the server error log (not magento logs).
