Looping back to Home page after Base url change

When I changed the Base URL from https://my_domain.com to https://www.my_domain.com, the links in the Home page keep looping back to the same Home page and don't go to any other page.

When I remove the www part, all function properly. System hosted on Apache, Community Edition.

Can anyone explain why it is happening?

Did you clear out the cache, and do a full re-index?

Thanks for your reply. I did clear the cache, but did not do a re-index.

This re indexing should be done in the Magento Admin, under System > Index Management - right?

If I do a re indexing, can it impact anything else? I have to ask this because, I have just recovered from a major disaster with the system and I am paranoid about doing anything!
