When I activate FedEx Shipping in the admin and I try to check out, when I get to the shipping step in the checkout I get a blank page.
Anyone experience this before? If so, is there a work around or a fix for this?

Try to enable the debug mode for Fedex in system configuration.
Also check the system log and exception log under var/log directory.
If errors are there for the Fedex update your question with those errors.
