Totally unable to make any edits

So I have been given the task of fixing a website that was made about a decade ago and hasn't been updated or changed in any way since.

It is running on magento 1.8 and the main issue is that I cannot make any changes to anything, whenever I try to apply the changes it thinks about it for a few minutes then gives me a timed out message and the changes haven't been saved.

I don't need a perfect fix as we will likely be building an entire new site sometime soon but in the short term I need to set products as out of stock or disable/delete them.

If you are still facing this problem then try this below solution. 

1. Log in to your Magento Admin Panel.
2. Go to System ->> Configuration
3. Click on “Inventory” in the left side menu pane
4. Open the “Stock Options” section
5. Change the “Display Out of Stock Products” to “Yes“
6. Click “Save Config“
