the order confirmation email is not sent to customer or merchant

I have been round the block trying to understand why order confirmations aren't being sent to either the customer or the merchant (me). automatically.
I have read many threads but I am just getting more confused.
Please could someone help me from the start, what should I be checking first, perhaps someone can help me step by step.  I would much appreciate it.

Hello ulefos,

First of all, you sure that your server can send email, try a simple test with sending email first. You can google.

Second, you should sure that Order confirmation is enabled: System > Configuration > SALES > Sales Emails > Order. Go to Sales > Orders > open an order > click Send Email, check ok or not.

I checked out your link and my site is live.
Order confirmation is enabled
Went to order view and sent an email which said it was sent, but not received.

I have tried a test email (hummingbirduk.com) and the test was successful, and it was in my inbox on server. This is what hummingbirduk says
If it is, then it’s indicative that the error lies with your Magento installation or its configuration, and not with your server configuration

Any other ideas.

I just had an order through had to manually send invoice email, which came through fine but I want it sent as soon as the order is created, or am I missing something.

more weird goings on

customer placed an order - Placed on 10 November 2015 15:41:04 GMT viewed inside magento admin, same order came through at 18.10 but 7 emails all the same.

also at the same time new order 10 Nov 2015 17:45:29 came through at 18.10 but had 2 emails the same.

I'm glad Im getting them, but so many would this be a cron issue?
