Apply changes in to an original theme without loose changes when perform a theme upgrade.

I want to make changes in a magento theme and dont lose applied changes when perform a normal upgrade of the theme.

Can someone help me?

Hi @ruipt, please refer to the Designer's Guide to understand how you can build a theme or package rather than just modifying the core theme. This will protect your new custom theme from being overridden by upgrades.

Hi Sherrie. 

I do not intend to modify an original theme of magento installation, what i intend to change is a megento theme that i bought in themeforest.net, but the theme is always being updated for bugs correction.
My question is how to make changes in the theme, safely, so that when i upgrade for a new version don't lose these changes?

very simple - you have to create a subpackage - child theme like in wordpress, and edit only these files.

every theme on themeforest now have User Guide - how to create a child theme, even some menu in admin.
