Show attribute on category page

All products have a attribute "type"

When a category is selected , the different "types" and amount of products in "type" should be displayed, before the products list.

Somewhere I changed a setting. Did not alter any code.

I'm assuming that you were using layered navigation to do this.  If so, check to see if the category in question is set as an anchor in the Magento admin.  Catalog > Manage Categories, select your category on the left.  Click the "Display Settings" tab and set "Is Anchor" to Yes.
