Can't edit a product without first changing 'Store View' to 'Default Store View'

I'm very very new to Magento 2 and we have imported some test data from our Magento 1 web site.  But if I edit a product, the changes do not appear, unless I go and change the product to: 'Store View: Default Store View' before making changes.  This is obviously very annoying to have to do this and every time.  I tried setting Single Store mode to on, but that took away the Default Store View option and only allowed me to change the page in a way that will not show on the front end.  I am so confused and frustrated, can someone please explain this in a really simple way for me.

You can change the default store view to any of the existing store views that you have created. To do this, log in to the admin panel of your Magento and go to System menu>Manage Stores. On the page that opens you'll see a table with the existing websites, stores and store views.

Or you can find checkbox in front of fields, you can unchecked and change value

This configuration to change data for store specific and by default it should be default store view.

Sorry @Manish Mittal, I am struggling to find it.  In Admin, I have gone in to SYSTEM, but MANAGE STORES is not an option there?

I have not been able to find a solution to this issue.  I am thinking I might need to change the products through the database, but I am nervous about doing this and I am not even sure what I need to change the value to, to make the products editable without changing the store view first.  I really would like to be able to put my store in to Single Store mode and have it work.
