Option to disable asking for a phone number in the checkout per store view (or country)

Not all countries require a phone number on the shipping label, so it would be great to have the option to select per store view if you want to ask the customer for a phone number in the checkout or not. Per country is maybe even better, but that might be a bit much.

Statistics show that conversion drops when you ask potential customers for their phone number.

A few months ago, I was setting up an online store and had the same concern. I noticed that my conversion rate dropped when I started asking for a phone number, especially since not every country requires it for shipping labels. I was debating whether to add an option to ask for it per store view or by country, and eventually decided on just asking for a non VOIP number (as I read it could help with verification in certain places).

Funny story – I once tried to order something from a site that insisted on a phone number. I didn’t have one listed, so I just left the checkout page. The store ended up losing my sale, and I felt bad for them! So yeah, I can definitely see why reducing those friction points can boost conversions.
