Plugin/API for sales data

Hi,
I’m new to Megento. I’ve been asked to investigate how to get the sales data from a website for use in an external tax system. My question is: do I need to write a plugin or use an API to get it. Also, where do I find an example of some code that would typically get that data from the WP site. Or any applicable documentation would be a great help.

You can get all the sales data by exporting the order.
