Login/Registration pages error/success messages don't show

have migrated a magento 1.9 server to a magento 2.3 server.

everything went fine and i am really happy with that.

my only problem is that the page messages on the login and registration page don't work. so when someone uses an already used email on registration or a wrong password on login the only thing that happens is a reload of the page.

I have been searching for a solution for the last 2 days with no result. Could someone more experienced show me the way of what to check to debug this?

1. I have checked that the block is in place with the placeholder. And it is.
2. I have checked that the cookies work. What i have found is that the mage-message cookie value does change but remains empty.

Any suggestion on what else to check? thank you.

is it possible this happens because of varnish?

It's late but I'd like to ask if you have found the solution? And if you don't mind could you please help me by sharing your fix.

As I'm also facing the same issue in 2.4.2-p1. non of the errors/messages are getting displayed.
