M2 Search always returns all products but advanced search works.

I have recently install Magento 2.1.7 and then upgraded to 2.1.9 CE and we have the laster Porto theme installed 2.6.1 (listed as compatible)

What we have found is that the regular search always returns all product is the catalog, where as the advanced search work as expected.

We have MySQL5.6.

There appeared to be an issue with older 1.x Magentos but I can't find anything similar on any forum.    There seem to be references to 1 column vs 2 column and layered navigation, but only as questions.

Anyone have any ideas?  ( I'm new to M , and can't follow the code at all.... (

yes it is related to that.

if you set 1 colum then it will show all product.

Must need to activate layer nav on search otherwise it will show all products.

My problem is that as far as I can tell, it is in column mode and layered navigation is on.

We are using PORTO as a theme.    but I also have the same result going back to luma.

If I could get one theme working, them I could do the compare.

Any suggestions?

I hope your problem has been solved already since it was in 2017... Can you tell me your solution? It looks likes I've the same problem over here, also since i've the Porto theme.
