Sales order quote missing

We have a strange situation where we were trying to invoice an older order (1 month old) and we get an error saying it's missing a cartId.  Looking at it a bit closer, it looks like the quote associated with the sales order is missing.

 

Is there any reason this quote would be missing, and is it possible to recover that quote in any way?

A quick note on this - this was a purchase order that was made ~33 days ago.  Is it possible the quote was removed via cron job despite there being a sales order made, but not invoiced?
