main.ERROR: The specified path is not allowed. [] []

We recently updated to Magento 2.2.8 and we have the following error which crashes our client's site:

Errors in the system log: [2019-05-21 16:27:10] main.ERROR: The specified path is not allowed. [] []

I have set up permissions to files and directories as per the recommended settings. Has anyone else experienced this error and how can it be fixed?

I've found no reference to it online.

I get tons of these in my system.log file and have no idea where its coming from or why its happening.

I'm on 2.3.2 and I believe these errors started with 2.3.0.

Running on Gen4 GoDaddy VPS that runs CentOS 7.
