Product images broken in Magento 2.1.6

why in magento 2.1.6 you have to run the catalog:images:resize for the images to appear while in magento 2.1.5 I dont have to do this. This process take very long time and would stop somewhere in the middle. Anyone having this problem and know how to fix. Thank you.

I think Magento changed the way product images were handled to improve load times. Now it looks like all image sizes are generated on product creation and put in different directories.

I recently experienced this error on M2.2.6.

I went through all the steps outlined in this thread, permissions etc. I'd run clear cache via command line. But what solved it for me was taking a look to see if the folder the error was reporting on actually existed on my server. It didn't. 

I logged into Magento admin and cleared image cache. This refreshed the cache folders and everything worked as it should
