Code where Paypal passes Magento version number

I was told that Paypal is writing to their customers running Magento 1, that in the end of June they will stop accepting payments. How do they actually know what version the store is running. I thought the API did not require that such information is transmitted. Or am I wrong?

I am curious as to what will happen with credit card transactions starting July 1st.  We are in the process of moving to M2 but may miss the date by about a week or 2.  We are using Braintree. We did receive a notice but it's very vague if they will be declining all transactions.
