How are you using AI in your store operations now?

Hey everyone,

I’m curious how other store owners and developers are using AI behind the scenes, not just use chatgpt or chatbots, but deeper into operations.

  • Are you automating internal tasks like answering repetitive team questions or product lookups?

  • Using AI to assist with order management, customer service, or catalog maintenance?

  • Have you built anything custom or are you mostly using off-the-shelf tools?

I’m exploring how merchants make the business run smoother, especially when the store starts to scale.

Would love to hear what you're trying, what's working, and what’s been disappointing.

Thanks!

Really interesting to see how others are integrating AI. I've started experimenting with AI-driven product recommendations and chat support it's made a noticeable difference in customer engagement. Curious to hear what tools or approaches others here are finding most effective!

Did you use off-the-shelf SaaS product or you built it yourself? Check out https://github.com/upsidelab/enthusiast It's an open-source AI agent for e-commerce. It can be plugged into a store’s catalog and internal docs to handle those kinds of use cases. So far we’ve tested it for product search, recommendations, and support automation, and the flexibility has been helpful since it can run either cloud-based or self-hosted.

AI in Store Operations

1. Inventory Forecasting & Management

  • Predictive demand analysis: AI models analyze sales patterns, seasonal trends, and promotions to forecast demand more accurately—helping reduce overstock and stockouts.

  • Automated reordering: Systems automatically generate orders when inventory falls below predefined thresholds, saving time and preventing gaps in supply.

2. Personalized Customer Experiences

  • In-store recommendations: AI-powered kiosks or mobile apps suggest relevant products based on customer browsing or purchase history.

  • Dynamic promotions: Digital signage responds to real-time data (e.g., weather, store traffic) and offers personalized deals to boost engagement.

3. Pricing Optimization

  • Dynamic pricing algorithms scan competitor prices, market demand, and inventory levels to suggest optimal pricing—maximizing both sales and margins.

  • Markdown automation: AI can recommend when to discount slow-moving items to clear inventory efficiently.

4. Chatbots & Virtual Assistants

  • Customer inquiries: AI chatbots handle routine requests like store hours, product availability, and FAQs—freeing up staff for more complex tasks.

  • Checkout assistant: In-store kiosks powered by AI help customers self-serve at checkout or locate items quickly.

5. Supply Chain & Logistics

  • Route planning for deliveries: AI optimizes delivery routes based on traffic data, order locations, and weather—improving speed and cutting transportation costs.

  • Demand-driven restocking: Systems alert logistics teams when specific items need replenishment, optimizing delivery schedules.

6. Loss Prevention & Security

  • Smart surveillance: AI-powered video systems detect suspicious behavior (e.g., shoplifting) and alert staff in real time, enhancing security without being intrusive.

  • Checkout fraud detection: AI identifies anomalies in POS transactions—like excessive discounts or return abuse—to reduce losses.

7. Staffing & Workforce Efficiency

  • Smart scheduling: AI analyzes foot traffic patterns, sales volume, and local factors (weather, holidays) to recommend optimal staffing levels.

  • Task automation: Routine tasks—such as inventory counts, price tagging, or restocking alerts—can be automated, allowing staff to focus on customer engagement.

Real-World Example

Some modern stores already apply AI to:

  • Improve customer loyalty through personalized offers (like Sephora or Starbucks).

  • Speed up checkout with AI-powered scanning and predictive checkout stations.

  • Streamline inventory, using AI robots for shelf scanning (like in some Walmart locations).
