Selling eCommerce development services using Magento 2.0 CE platform

Selling eCommerce development services using Magento 2.0 CE platform

I'll keep it brief and to the point...

We are a bunch of developers who are setting up a small online website that will be offering eCommerce website development service for both B2B and B2C customers.

We'll be using the Magento 2 Community Edition platform, which as we all know happens to be an open source platform.

We'll be selling our service to different buyers through packages like starter package, business package and platinum package (each package having its own set of limitations / features)

Our question is this: Is there going to be an issue from Magento if they find out at some point in time that we have been using their platform to build websites for customers? Legal issue or something? We understand that the websites will be built on Magento's free / open source community edition, but is there any risk of getting sued by Magento?

Do we need to have some sort of agreement with Magento for this?

Thank you.

Hi @faisal_hameed,

First of all, welcome to the community forums!

I'm pretty sure you know you'll find information on StackExchange too. Normally the recomendation is to start diving into the http://devdocs.magento.com/ not only for learning but to correct and improve the docs.

If you are technical, being aware of Magento issues on Github is a great idea: https://github.com/magento/magento2/issues

Also is a good idea to read this post: https://community.magento.com/t5/Welcome-to-the-Magento-Community/Start-here-and-hello-from-me/m-p/5... (in particular the guidelines) and if you are not sure about how to use the forum you can read the FAQ: https://community.magento.com/t5/help/faqpage.

If you need information related with GDPR, you should check this: https://community.magento.com/t5/help/faqpage#gdpr

Regarding your main question: why do you believe you could be sued by building sites with Magento?

There are a lot of partners of Magento that builds stores with the platform and using the different editions of Magento: https://partners.magento.com/portal/directory/?partner_type=1

Can you share why you think you can be sued?

(my 2 cents)

Hi @Damian Culotta

Thank you for the quick reply. I'm new to the forum, so i'll definitely go through the links you have provided.

Well, we are not Magento partners. We are just a bunch of freelance developers. Sued, as in, we'd be using the CE platform to offer features (thru custom extension development) that are or might be available in their Enterprise edition. So we thought Magento might raise an issue or something.

Is it safe to use the magento platform and enhance to any level based on our requirement?

Re: Selling eCommerce development services using Magento 2.0 CE platform

Hi @faisal_hameed,

There are plenty of examples of modules that tries to reproduce some Commerce edition (formelry known as Enterprise) features to be available for Open Source edition (Community).

You can check at https://marketplace.magento.com/ for those options.

I understand you shouldn't find troubles if that's the scenario. But if you just copy code and rename the module you'll be in troubles (like any other case on any other software platform).
