Robert, we believe that the best way to go about this would be: 

 1. Use Mailchimp as your email marketing software. They have some free plans to start with. We use MC ourselves and are very happy with them.

2. Use MageMonkey by ebizmarts.

It's a well-known FREE extension that allows you to plug MailChimp into Magento. You will then be able to build email lists in MailChimp when customers sucscribe to your newsletter, blog, etc. from your Magento store.
