What you're describing is tokenization (vaulting) - a process of storing a credit card safely and securely with a payment gateway so that the card can be reused for future orders. Many solutions allow for more than one card to be stored, and for cards to be updated/edited as-needed, such as when a card is expired or replaced. Other solutions like Braintree from PayPal are common.

The good news is that you're not limited to one payment processor. There are M2 extensions in the Magento Marketplace for Authorize.net CIM, Stripe, and many others.

PS - Some merchants simply offer payment options like PayPal and Amazon Pay where shoppers generally already have saved credit cards.
