Error 500 Internal Service Error, after starting a backup

I did a new install of community 1.9.1, along with sample data, I added a few categories, a few attributes, 6 items, and initiated a backup. after less than a minute i got and Error 500 Internal service error. I get the same error on the front end. Anyone have any idea where to go from here?

The latest versions of Magento backup have an egregious bug where they change file permissions for no known good reason which slams up against security settings decreed by WHM cPanel, etc to keep your website safe from being hacked.
