How does magento organize products into groups of SKU?

Why I ask:
I ask because I want to lern how to import products into magento

What I have done so far:

I installed magento 2.23 locally with sample data. and theme that came with the installation. So found a product with SKU MH07, it is a product which comes in different sizes and color.

My question

How does magento know that all these unique SKU's should be part of the main SKU MH07? I mean for every size or color there is a unique SKU, like MH07-XL-Green. How does magento know that MH07-XL-Green is part of MH07. Also how does it know what size options to display on a product?

If you want to import products then export one configurable and import it.
