How long should a system back up run?

This business site has not completed a backup in several years, so prior to making any updates to the site I have initiated a system back up, putting the store into maintenance mode. How long does the backup take for a typical site? Is there a progress log available for diagnostics or debugging?

Depending on the data size and server, it may take a while. Did you initiate the backup process from Magento admin? If yes then it tends to be a slow process.

How do you get back into the system if a backup is taking too long, for example more than 24 Hours?
