Single Magento Installation, Multiple Stores

I'm currently working with 21 Magento storefronts (4 inactive) on a single Magento installation, with very little products shared between them (total of 10,080 different product SKUs). It is becoming cumbersome & slow to refresh product.

What is the recommended amount of:

Stores per installation

Items per store 

And are there ways to speed up our current CE 1.9.2.2 installation? Any other tips, tricks and recommendations appreciated!

what is your server specs, you need to post some mysql reports and logs.

For the performance issues of your website, you can check it on GTMetrix (https://gtmetrix.com/). This generates a report consisting of all the issues hampering the performance of your website and possible resolution of those issues.
