cache size

Hello, I'm running version 1.9.4.5 which was recently upgraded.  Now I am running out of HD space because my cache size is over 60GB.  The path to this cache file is .../html_public/onlinestore/var/cache/ and there are numerous subdirectories under the cache folder taking up over 60GB of HDD space. 

I want to know if I can delete these folders and if so, will it have any effect on my site, or was this used during the upgrade?

Any help would be appreciated.

The cache folder is just store temporary data so feel free to clean it, for the safe delete you can clean and flush the cache from admin panel then you can remove those folders. you can also backed up these folder in order to being saved from any unexpected exception.

You can freely clear Magento cache and manually and it will increase your website performance. You can clear cache from Magento admin panel or if you have SSH access then you can use commands to clear cache.
