How to group colors in Magento?

Hello!
I recently started working with Magento and I have (maybe stupid) question about colors. I want to group colors so the filters on the site would be way less than they are now. I mean now I have light blue, dark blue, blue etc because on the site we have many similar clothes and there's no way to differentiate them other than that (for example in one product we have a dark blue and a light blue shirt). I want the filter to show only blue and when a client clicks on 'blue' it will show also the light blue and the dark blue clothes. I know I have to use the Attribute manager, but I can't figure out how to do that. Your help would be very appreciated! My Magento version is 1.9.0.X.

by default, Magento does not provide such functionality.

Maybe possible using create two attribute

1) color 

2) sub color 

Then you need to some customize on this, when select color, need to show sub color
