How can I test my cart?

I'm just a store owner. I have a Magento cart. I am curious as to whether it works! I have no money and only minor coding skills. I paid to have the cart set up. I have some items in my cart. I think that I have correctly set up my USPS API. (I can get shipping quotes.) Now how do I make a test purchase using PayPal? I searched for the subject here and I found something about a 'sandbox.' I don't know how to use such a thing. Is it easy? Is there a step by step guide somewhere here or elsewhere for using it? Is there a link somewhere in Magento resources that says "Now, here's how to test your cart!" If so, I can't find it. I can access my ISP server and edit a file as needed. Thanks!

As you want the test mode, you should put 'Sandbox mode' : ON.

Here's a link to a $1 item in my shop. I'm just setting things up so there is no photo. It includes $1 postage. I tested it with my wife's credit card and a different address and it seemed to give me my postage setting OK. It also seemed to accept the CC info but when I clicked order the same cart window just appeared. I didn't get a 'success' message or an error.

I believe that when I paid a guy a couple years ago to set up my cart that he also did the sandbox testing. I went to try to select the sandbox option for testing and I found the attached result. All the set-up options are gone. I think they've been processed already.

What version of Magento are you currently using? It should say in the footer of the admin panel
