We are having an issue getting certain terms to be properly found when indexing our full text search. Our install is at version 1.9.

I've tried to debug the search but am running around in circles.
We have query terms in the search table for 'new' and 'old', but the system says it can't find any matches, which is not accurate. We have plenty of product with both strings in the name.
When we enable 'like' or 'combined' we find all instances, but it's not the way we want to run it. We want to match on the entire word because we don't want matches like 'gold' when we search for 'old'.
How can I debug the indexing of the site?
Why is 'old' not finding any matches?
Any advice/direction appreciated.
