Can't upgrade. Can I somehow do a fresh install and import data from MySQL?

I want to upgrade from 1.5.1 to 1.9.1.1 and I cannot seem to get it to work. I'm wondering at this point if it would easier to do a fresh install and import my products, categories and customers from my older sites database. I'm going to be redoing the template anyway.

Or if anyone has a method of upgrading that works let me know but I have not had luck.

all you have to do just upgrade to 1.6

then to 1.9

do not use magento connect manager , just upload 1.9 files and flush all possible caches,

then look for errors in server and magento logs
