Magento 1 end of life

Magento 1 end of life

Hello!

My name is Paula.

I use Magento 1 for my online store and I read about Magento 1 end of life.

I don't want to migrate to Magento 2.

Since the support expired on June 2020, website running will be affected?

Also, what means the end of Magento 1 life? Does it mean any website running with this version will be shut off or won't receive any update? The website will run normally?

Thank you!

Re: Magento 1 end of life

Hi Paula,

Yes, websites running Magento 1 are now unsupported by Adobe/Magento. There are no new patches being provided by the original software publishers. This is an issue for security as well as for compliances like PCI compliance.

The best long-term move is to plan to upgrade to a new platform, whether or not that's Magento 2. However, that takes time and money. As you're currently on Magento 1, the best thing that you can do is protect your site until you can migrate to something else.

So your website won't shut off, but as vulnerabilities are discovered, you won't be getting any security patches either. You may also have issues with your payment processors if you accept credit cards - according to the PCI compliance rules, you're expected to keep your website patched.

However, there are vendors that can help. Some are listed in an article from the Magento Association:

If you're trying to learn more about what to watch out for, here's a good eBook resource:

If a more concise checklist would be helpful, check out:

and, if you're looking for more information on where things stand, and how we got here, check out this article which includes links to lots of additional resources: https://medium.com/@robert.r/magento-1-is-dead-long-live-magento-1-dbb245382a85

Lastly, I'll mention that Mage-One , which began publishing Magento 1 patches after June 30, 2020, has already released 2 patches, with more on the way.

Best of luck!

Re: Magento 1 end of life

Switch to magento-lts that is 1.9 and still receives security updates.

Re: Magento 1 end of life

Why are you just not giving him the link to magento-lts? That suits him perfectly. I also wasted lots of time on 2.3.6 because I did not know magento-lts existed. How can you be M2 certified, and give such a bad advice????

The magento-lts has less security issues than the magento 2.x, did you even know that?

Re: Magento 1 end of life

The announcement for the Magento 1 EOL came with a suggestion to move to Magento 2. This platform seems to be an upgrade from Magento 1 with better site performance, though with some exceptions.

Magento 2 is more mobile-friendly than Magento 1 with an improved checkout experience. Albeit, it doesn’t make the upgrade any simpler. Despite being also from Magento, you still have to go through a total re-platform.

Since the architecture of Magento 1 differs from Magento 2, you can’t transfer your theme, and you’ll have to migrate some of your data manually.

If you’re unsure whether to switch from Magento 1, you might want to consider some issues you may encounter:

  • Extensions and plugins become unavailable or malfunction
  • You’ll expose your store to security risks and data compromise
  • The merchant’s site becomes unstable or degrades, and
  • Magento developers will become more comfortable with the latest version and its alternatives that are PCI DSS compliant
