Here's an official upgrade guide: http://devdocs.magento.com/guides/m1x/install/installing_upgrade_ce18_upgrade-roadmap.html

Another useful page here: http://devdocs.magento.com/guides/m1x/install/installing_upgrade_details.html

Re: update from 1.7 to 1.9

Hello marianaNc,

So your website current version is old, instead off installing patches you should have to upgrade version to Magento 19.3.2.

So it will have all security patches included. We can't directly upgrade to 19.3.2

Steps to upgrade :

1. should take a backup (Front end and sql-db) before proceed

2. upgrade to 1.8

3. upgrade 1.8 to 1.9

4. upgrade 1.9 to 1.9.3.2

So this much work included

I don't believe that's correct @bootsgrid. You don't have to upgrade to 1.8 or 1.9 first. You can go straight to the latest patch release of 1.9. Magento will cope with all of the upgrade paths. The latest version will have most of the security patches pre-packaged into it. You should check magento.com/security and the downloads page for more info about which patches will still be relevant https://magento.com/tech-resources/download. Essentially, if there's a patch available for your version number, install it Smiley Happy

Re: update from 1.7 to 1.9

Hi Tom Robertshaw,

Yes, I accept your answer but patches will updated the particular files only. It will not change the version your magento.

Also Patches installation is not safe, it causes some problem occurs. So, we suggest download the latest version of magento 1.9.x & upload your modules(extensions).

Then, Install from scratch. This is safest method.
