Braintree not showing in checkout

I have Braintree completely configured, with sandbox data, and it is enabled.  

No matter what I do, I can't get it to show as an available payment method.  I even setup SSL thinking maybe without ssl it would be disabled, still no luck.

Has anyone successfully enabled Braintree?

Here is what I've observed, likely as designed;

Running on localhost or IP, Braintree sandbox will work.   Production will not.

Running on domain, Braintree production will work.  Sandbox will not.

I guess it's just assumed if your site is using a domain, it must be a production site.

I am trying to find out from Braintree if we can add a host name to the allowed sandbox staging sites as a lot of times that's what we will have staging.******.com
