Category Links directing to Home Page

Hi 

I have a problem with my Magento  site. 

Main Category links direct me to the home page but sub category link work fine. 

Any advice on how to fix this ?

In this case, please verify configuration of category. If all fine then check with redirect rules under below path:

Marketing > SEO & Search > URL Rewrites

Doesnt seem to have an effect if I update the URL rewrite , still takes me to home page. 

Also The Categories showing up on the main page is sub category , if I create a root category it does not show up , is this normal ? 

I think maybe the theme is broken , how can i check if its the theme thats broken ?

Hello @Mr_Macaroni 

The root category will not be shown on the front end it is the default Magento feature.

for category re-direct issues Can you please change the theme to do that go to
content > design configuration 

Select the store and change the theme to LUMA or blank
Then run the deployment commands and check the category URL issue.
